In Moncton, Krista Richard has been running a bike giveaway program called Bikes and Trikes for Everyone for 14 years.
She collects donated bikes throughout the year, refurbishes them, and distributes them to children in need.
Five-year-old Gracie Mae Brown recently received a shiny pink bike from Richard's program.
Her mother, Natasha Lewis, shared that Gracie Mae was thrilled to choose her favorite bike from over 80 available options.
Since receiving the bike, Gracie Mae has been riding it every evening, enjoying family walks where she can now join her friends.
Lewis noted that at least 50 children in their neighborhood have benefited from Richard's program.
She emphasized that having a bike helps children relieve stress, behave better, and get exercise.
Richard has given away thousands of bikes over the years, with over 400 distributed last year alone.
She recalled a memorable day this year when she gave away 88 bikes, setting a personal record.
One young boy was so excited that he didn't want to go home, repeatedly telling Richard, "You do good job."
Richard's vision is for every child to have a bike during the summer, reminiscent of her own childhood experiences.
She believes that in an era dominated by video games, getting kids on bikes fosters social connections and community engagement.
With a small team of volunteers, Richard continues to collect and repair bikes, ensuring that children on her waitlist can pick their bikes on Sundays.
She has also started keeping adult bikes for parents who wish to join their children on rides.
Richard is committed to maintaining the program as long as possible, driven by the joy and smiles of the children she helps. |
